How to Stay Hydrated Without Gaining Weight

When you are thirsty you need to drink. In hot weather we need to stay hydrated, but how can we avoid gaining weight with all we drink. The secret is to look at the calorie content of your drink. While sports drinks are considered by many to be the natural drink to consume, especially after playing sports, most are laden with sugar that we don't need. Fruit punches are much too sugary, too.

Natural water is the ultimate healthy drink; it will hydrate you without adding centimetres to your waistline. But if you get tired of water there are other alternatives. Low-calorie flavoured drinks are safe as they are sweetened with additions such as Nutrasweet. Avoid regular soda, but diet soda is okay. Limit your intake of caffeine such as cola, to about 4 cans per day. Club soda or flavoured sparkling water is fine.

If you don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, you can water down the real stuff with three parts of water to one part of drink. Or try adding a dash of 100% juice to club soda or seltzer. If you get tired of the taste of water, try adding ice cubes to it. Once you get used to it, the taste of pure water is just great - and you can love what it does to your waistline.
